CPI is dedicated to building a fair economy in which good jobs with healthcare coverage allow all working people to live with dignity and hope for the future. We envision local government as an open and effective champion for the common good.
We hope to enable residents of low- and moderate-income communities to have an informed and powerful voice in decisions affecting their quality of life.
The greatest core problem now facing San Diego and the nation is the massive and growing inequity in income, wealth, and power. While San Diego's economy has grown, the majority of San Diegans - workers, families, students, recent graduates, and the elderly - increasingly must struggle to find and keep a home, access medical care, and afford basic necessities such child care, transportation, clothing and even food.
Yet our taxpayer dollars continue to flow to developments that generate mostly low-wage jobs with no healthcare benefits, and create financial and environmental burdens. Communities have a right to expect new developments to bring good jobs, affordable housing, child care, reliable public transportation, parks and other shared benefits.
CPI combines research, policy advocacy, community organizing and public education to influence discussions and decisions in San Diego regarding economic justice for workers and their families.
Research. Our high-quality research on jobs, affordable housing, health care, development projects, and other economic issues provides a foundation for important policy decisions.By analyzing data to determine the impact on working people and communities, CPI produces concrete information documenting the need for change.
Public Education and Media Outreach. Through strategic communications with media, community organizations, individuals and policymakers, we build awareness of economic inequities and policy-based solutions.
Coalition Building. By working with local organizations as well as allies across the state and the nation, we help unite diverse communities to take action for the good of all.
Leadership Development. CPI is committed to supporting and strengthening the capacity of our allies and partners to lead, unite and mobilize their constituencies into action.
